Bioplastic

Global climate and environmental crisis

Globally, we produce about 400 million tons of plastic waste annually. There is now an estimated 30 million tons of plastic waste in seas and oceans, and a further 109 million tons has accumulated in rivers. The build-up of plastics in rivers implies that leakage into the ocean will continue for decades to come, even if mismanaged plastic waste could be significantly reduced.

To address these critical environmental challenges, the Kingdom of Bahrain seized the opportunity in 2018 to join the UN Environment Programme’s global ‘Clean Seas Campaign’. Since then, youth networks, civil society, the government and others have spared no effort to turn the tide on plastic.
